tourist in LA

a friend asked me to recommend what someone should do if they go to LA for the first time, so looking at my list, i thought i’d share.

venice beach:  the big thing people miss when they do venice are the canals.  they are a little hidden, but shouldn’t be missed. a magical place.
venice:  abbott kinney - quickly becoming the trendiest street in all of LA.  lots of groovy shops and eating places.
santa monica:  main street - another place tourists often miss, but for my money the nicest area in all of santa monica.
rent a bike and ride the path in venice/smonica - but do it in the morning while overcast - its cooler then - and definately NOT on the weekend as its full of people who have no idea what they are doing.
the coast
a trip really should include a drive from santa monica up the Pacific Coast Highway for 60 minutes up, 60 min back.
gorgeous drive that ensures someone is really in southern california
for something super special on that drive - a little off the highway though, is in topanga canyon, a place called Inn of the Seven Rays.  magical outdoor restaurant thing, organic.you expect meryl streep to walk out of the restroom.
inland…
i’d recommend the Farmers Market for a meal or snack.  funky and interesting.  it’s right next to a massive outdoor shopping mall with all the brand stores - is she’s a shopper that’s a place to go for the usual.  that’s all south of west hollywood’ish.
another awesome drive starts north of the hollywood bowl and one goes west on mulholland drive, all above the city in the hills there.  classic drive with an awesome view.  well worth the time.
sunset plaza in west hollywood is a pretty and not cheap area for restaurants porches and fake boobs.  that’s on sunset.
all the comedy clubs…ya never know who will get up.
aimlessly walking or driving through beverly hills.  - avoid that area at all costs between 5-7 though.  santa monica blvd is like the DVP.
drive hwy1 south past LAX, through all the beach towns, all the way to Long Beach. it’s a great trip, short, very scenic.
yes, LA is a driving town.  i hate it for that.  but, that’s how they do it there.
ps the whole hollywood experience is akin to the niagara falls experience…once you know, you don’t go back. certainly the least interesting part of a trip to LA is hollywood/vine etc.  sort of like going to times square in the 80’s…
